User Interface Design for Virtual Reality: A Research Tool for Tracking Navigation

In the rapidly developing area of User Interface Design (UID), the existing knowledge and understanding of UID serves as a basis for further research and study of factors affecting users as they interact with interfaces that utilize the technology of multimedia, virtual reality and intelligent agents. Navigation is one of the factors that is being investigated to help designers develop user int...

Large-Scale Mapping and Navigation in VirtualWorlds: Thesis Summary

The prevalence of virtual worlds presents a challenge for intelligent mobile agents. Online, large, persistent virtual worlds such as Second Life and massively multi-player online games are becoming more popular. There is a challenge to provide intelligent agents for these environments that are able to generate and use maps to navigate the world without long delays or a large amount of map pre-...

Representing and Generating Maps of Large-Scale Virtual Environments for Intelligent Mobile Agents

This paper looks at the challenges and solutions for intelligent mobile agents existing in virtual environments. Representing and using a map of these very large-scale, dynamic environments is a key challenge in providing an autonomous agent for large, online worlds. We look at a method for improving the generation of probabilistic roadmaps by observing and using the movements of other avatars ...

Navigation in Electronic Worlds: Research Review for Depth Oral Exam

Navigation is a fundamental human activity. It occurs in a wide range of activities and contexts, and it has accordingly been studied by a range of disciplines. In the social sciences, anthropologists have studied the tools and techniques of different cultures, including Western ones. Psychologists have studied the cognitive structures and processes involved in human navigation. In the field of...

Scalable real-time animation of rivers

Many recent games and applications target the interactive exploration of realistic large scale worlds. These worlds consist mostly of static terrain models, as the simulation of animated fluids in these virtual worlds is computationally expensive. Adding flowing fluids, such as rivers, to these virtual worlds would greatly enhance their realism, but causes specific issues: as the user is usuall...
